Saturday, August 31st

Another beautiful morning...It was again in the 50 overnight... So nice... :-)

Sitting out on the deck overlooking the river, drinking coffee this morning.

I woke up extremely swollen, tingling in my hands and matter coming out of my eyes.  My chest, neck and face are really red.  We went into the park yesterday.  I suppose being out in the sun that long took its toll on me. Hurting this morning. :-(
We started at around 9:30am and got back to the cabin at around 4:00pm.  Was a long day...
We saw Elk, Moose, and other little critters... :-) So neat...

The garbage was tipped over last night...we aren't sure what did it  They have notes to keep coolers and food inside because of the bear problems. ?????

Eternal Life: Adjust Your Focus

Read | Romans 8:6

Many believers can almost instinctively complete this statement: “For the wages of sin is_____.” Reading that sentence, perhaps you even filled in the blank out loud: death. We all know what that means, right? Verse 23 of Romans 6 proclaims it’s what we deserve for our sin. This is how we view ourselves from time to time—dirty sinners who have narrowly escaped a horrible death.

The problem here is that too many believers remember just the first half of the verse—the part that deals with our sin. If we focus on the sin rather than God’s plan for restoration, then our entire spiritual perspective gets off balance. Emphasizing the sin directs all the attention to self—what I have done, how I have acted, where I have been. This self-centeredness will never lead to the peaceful assurance of salvation that the Lord has provided. When we focus on ourselves, we leave little room for God.

Romans 8:6 is a good companion verse to the one we’ve been looking at, because the Lord would have us focus not on our problem, but on His solution. You see, Romans 6:23 is not simply a condemnation for sin; it is a proclamation of salvation! The apostle Paul boldly declares that God saw our dire situation and acted on His own initiative to rescue us.

The heavenly Father graciously handed salvation over to us as a free gift. And when the Lord gives a gift, there is no one who can ever steal it away and nothing that can interfere with its permanence (Rom. 8:35-39). That’s the assurance our God wants us to have.

Another great day!

Balm in Gilead - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

Balm in Gilead

"Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?"
Jeremiah 8:22

"Is there no relief?!" The anguished man in the television commercial rubbed his forehead in pain. He seemed to despair for an aspirin strong enough to help. As Christians, we occasionally wonder the same. When hardships broadside us, when pain settles in to stay, we cry, "Is there no relief?"

Jeremiah wondered the same. Amidst the horror of the Babylonian invasion, the prophet looked toward the east, to Gilead, a land that was famous for producing medicinal balms to heal wounds. He inasmuch asked, "Do they make an ointment in Gilead strong enough to help us? Is there no cure, even in a place like Gilead?!"

We know the answer. For out of Palestine, there came a cure. An ointment to soothe the wounded. A salve to ease the pain. "...Jesus said, 'It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick... for I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners'" (Matthew 9:12). When you are the One who is at the center of the universe, holding it all together, if everything moves, breathes, and has its essence, its being in You, You can do no more than give yourself when someone is hurting (Acts 17:28). Jesus helps the hurt.

And so, in Isaiah 54 He becomes the Husband to the divorced woman.   In Psalm 10 He becomes the Father of the orphaned. In Zechariah 2:5 He becomes the wall of fire to those who need protection. In Isaiah 62 He becomes the Bridegroom to the woman who's grieves that she'll never marry. In Exodus 15 He becomes the Healer to the sick. In Isaiah 9 He is the Wonderful Counselor to the confused and depressed. In John 4 He becomes the Living Water to the thirsty. In John chapter 6 He's the Bread of Life to those who are hungry for more than this world can give.

Eternal Life: You Can Be Sure

Read | 1 John 5:13

Writing to the early church, the apostle John wanted to make something perfectly clear: God offers His children everlasting life. Men and women in Christ should have no fear of physical death, because their true lives—their eternal lives—are secure in Jesus. Today’s passage is unique because in it, John plainly states his purpose for writing. The point of his ministry was to empower believers with the unshakable faith of eternal life in Christ.

The basis for this truth lies in . . .

1. The unchanging promises of God. Over and over in his gospel and letters, the apostle declares God’s assurance of never-ending life. For example, he quotes Jesus’ promise of eternity in John 3:16, 6:40, and 10:27-30.

2. The unconditional love of God. Our Father loves us so much that He wants an everlasting, intimate relationship with each one of us. To achieve this, He demonstrated His love in a remarkable way: by providing our salvation at a great price (Rom. 5:6-11; 8:33-39).

3. The finished work of Christ on the cross. By offering His life as a substitutionary sacrifice on our behalf, Jesus provided the means of salvation once and for all. Our part is to accept the gift He so freely gives (Heb. 10:23-28).

4. The witness of God’s Spirit to our heart. Our Father places His Holy Spirit within every believer to testify to the truth of our salvation (Rom. 8:15-17).

Scripture tells us that we can have complete assurance of our salvation in Jesus Christ. Does your day-to-day life reflect this confidence?

Another great day!

The Great Amen - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

The Great Amen

"For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ. And so through him the 'Amen' is spoken by us to the glory of God."       2 Corinthians 1:20

There's enough power in this little verse to ponder for an entire year. Just think: every promise that the Father has ever made finds its fulfillment in his Son, the Lord Jesus. When God promises that he will impart to us grace, he gives us Jesus, the Lord of grace. When God promises to give us peace, he gives us Jesus, the Prince of peace. The promise of comfort? He gives us the Lord of all comfort. And when he imputes to us his righteousness, he gives us his Son, the Lord of righteousness. Even life finds its source in Jesus, the Word of Life.

Even the familiar promise of Romans 8:28 finds its fulfillment in Christ: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him... For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son." This wonderful promise we so often claim finds its answer in Jesus.

Jesus is everything to you - the answer to your every hope, prayer and promise. The Christian walk is not so complicated after all. It is simple. It is... Jesus. And I say, "Amen," to that.
__________________________________
Revelation 3:14 says, "These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation." The word "Amen" means "so be it," and "so it will be," and "so it is." Today, what can you say "Amen!" to? How is Jesus the "so be it" in your life?
I sing today, "Standing on the promises of Christ my Lord, Bound to him eternally by love's strong cord, Overcoming daily with the Spirit's sword, Standing on the promises of God." When I stand on your promises, Jesus, I am grounded in you. Amen.

Lord, you've used rods, slingshots, and loaves in the Bible to do your work. Use me to glorify your name.

Blessings,

Eternal Life: Do You Want It?

Read | 1 John 5:3-12

Good health, it seems, is on everyone’s mind these days. Books about the latest, greatest fad diets top the bestseller list. Nutrition stores and health clubs pop up all over town—at times right next door to fast food restaurants. And late-night television is constantly unveiling a flood of gadgets and gizmos, all designed to get you into “the best shape of your life” (and with the promise of minimal effort and commitment).

Why is the health industry such a booming business? It’s because longevity is a major concern: most people have an innate desire to live as long as they can. But in addition to wanting quantity of years, people also want the highest quality life possible. Yet this emotional need for a long, robust life is most frequently centered around the physical world. What about life after death?

Scripture makes it absolutely clear that eternal life is available to every person on earth (Rom. 10:13). Sickness, disease, and death are all bound to life on this planet; however, everyone in Christ has already overcome the worst this world has to offer—namely, death (1 John 5:4-5). Despite their emotional appeal, television infomercials cannot offer anything to compare with the promise of eternal life.

As believers, we should be shouting this message from the rooftops. The people around us are yearning for a word of life, but too many Christians have remained silent. Why? How can we keep secret what God went to such great lengths to reveal? We can live forever! Who in your life needs to hear this amazing truth today?

What Have You Got? - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

What Have You Got?

"The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?"           Judges 6:14

I learned a lesson early on in my 'career' as a quadriplegic: Work with what you've got. The occupational therapist taught me how to use muscles in a whole new way to make up for ones that were rendered useless. The good nerves in the upper part of my deltoids help me get a lot of work done that would otherwise be the responsibility of my biceps.

God's been in the 'occupational therapy' business for ages. He has often come to weak, visionless people and worked with what they had. Whether it was Moses' rod, Samson's jaw bone, or David's sling, God simply took what was made available and showed his people what was possible.

To underscore the possibilities and potential, God tells us who's in charge. To simple people like Gideon and Jeremiah, he said, "I'm sending you." That was it. That was all the guarantee they needed. For Gideon, the guarantee would take him to triumph. For Jeremiah, through trials. In these and others, God's commission was sufficient to start and complete the task. No matter how weak or limited God's people are, no matter what little they have to offer, the Lord works wonders with what he's got!

God is always commissioning people. He's commissioning you today with his word. If you have doubts about that, consider Jesus' words in John 20:21, "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." Jesus seeks willing disciples who will yield whatever resources at their disposal to carry out his purposes.

So, what have you got? Make the list and show him. Short list? No matter, take it and apply it to the needs and people around you.

He'll take care of the rest. That is, after all, his business!

Lord, here's my list. You've used rods, slingshots, and loaves in the Bible to do your work. Can you use me?

Another beautiful day!  We had thunderstorms roll through last night.

We had a long day yesterday but
we found our way to the cabin in Loveland, Colorado.  We can look out our bedroom windows and see the river.  It's only a few feet away.  We had our windows open last night and could hear the water.  In the morning we can sit out on the deck and look over the river. So peaceful!

It's beautiful in the mountains but Paul was having a tough time catching his breath when we first arrived.  Kris could also tell the difference.
Everyone else seems to have adjusted to the difference in elevation.

We went to bed around 10:45pm Colorado time and I woke up my normal Minnesota time between 5:30/6am  :-(  There is an hour difference. So woke up at 4:30/5...

I'm still have difficulty walking...it feels like I have lead weight I'm dragging along with me.  When I got out of bed this morning, I needed to hold on to something.    :-(

I appreciate what I'm able to do :-)

On Mission for Jesus

Read | Luke 2:40-52

It's a growing trend amond businesses to compose a mission statement in order to keep focused on what really matters to the company. When we look at Jesus, we see He had a clear focus on His mission. By age 12, He was already able to verbalize His purpose: He told Mary and Joseph that He had to be about His Father’s business.

As Christians, we may understand the global mandate of the Great Commission, But that can feel so vast in scope that it’s possible to lose sight of how we, as individuals, should implement it at home. It’s a good idea to think in terms of your own personal mission statement, which is a bit like the popular message “Think globally; act locally.” What it means to act locally is expressed in the old hymn “Brighten the Corner Where You Are” (I. D. Ogden, 1913). It begins:

Do not wait until some deed of
greatness you may do,
Do not wait to shed your light afar;
To the many duties ever near you
now be true,
Brighten the corner where you are.

We should never underestimate the power of attending to nearby duties, even if they seem mundane or unimpressive. Second Samuel 23:11-12 (kjv) gives us an interesting example: while all the people were fleeing from the field, Shammah “stood” and “the Lord wrought a great victory.” Your mission right now may be simply to stand. Sometimes that’s all it takes for the Lord to bring about a powerful victory.

Another great day!

Tuesday, August 27th

Another beautiful sunny morning!  Again pretty toasty out there...

My right side continues to give be trouble...The Dr mentioned using a cane for support if I continue to have problems... :-(
I have the mattery discharge from my eyes. The Eye Dr thought it was the Prednisone but the more I have it the more I think it's the swelling causing it.

I have DM and Lupus but the DM and Lupus doesn't have me... :-)

We are leaving for the airport at 8:00am this morning.  Our flight to Denver leaves at 11:00am.  Looking forward to this trip...Paul, Kris and I are going with my sister, Brenda and her daughters, Jodi and Kari and her grandson, Devin and meeting my brother, Tim and his wife, Connie.  Will be alot of fun :-).

I Continue to meditate...
Meditation helps you find yourself.  You control your thoughts instead of the thought controling you. :-)

"The humble will be filled with fresh joy from the LORD.
The poor will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

That is why the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, says to the people of Israel,

'My people will no longer be ashamed
  or turn pale with fear.
For when they see their many children
and all the blessings I have given them,
they will recognize the holiness of the Holy One of Israel.
They will stand in awe of the God of Jacob.'"

Isaiah 29:19, 22–23

If you're in a tough place right now, know two things: First, God is with you and knows what you are going through; and second, he will not allow your suffering to go on forever. Trust that even now, he is acting to accomplish his purposes—to pour out his blessings and bring you fresh joy. The only prerequisite is humility—trusting in him to act. Be assured, he will!

Responding to Closed Doors

Read | Philippians 4:6-7

Disappointments can be hard to bear. One minute life seems to be on track for what we hope and dream. The next moment our way is blocked. How do we respond when facing closed doors?

If our hearts are set on a certain course of action, we may convince ourselves it is God’s will and push ahead regardless. We might send up a quick prayer asking for His help or blessing, but mostly we just move forward. By manipulating people or circumstances, we could get what we want but be outside of God’s plan.

Another response to a blocked path is to become emotionally upset. Then we face the danger of operating out of our feelings and replacing a Christ-centered perspective with a self-centered one. Strong emotions can be a temptation to blame others—including the Lord. Anger toward Him can, in turn, lead us to rebel against Him and His ways.

Godly responses, on the other hand, start with waiting and trusting. When the Lord blocks our way, we are to have faith in Him, taking time to assess the situation, and praying for guidance. By asking the Spirit to increase our sensitivity to the events around us, we will be able to notice any open doors. Even if we find none, we are to live with hope, anticipating other doors of opportunity in His perfect time. Thanking God for His work on our behalf is essential, even at times when we lack understanding. Finally, remaining faithful to what the Lord has called us to do is an important part of our wait.

Wait. Trust. Pray. Obey. This is God’s prescription for handling closed doors.

Another great day!

A Heart of Silver - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

A Heart of Silver

"He has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping. For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver. You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs... Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me."
Psalm 66:9-11, 20

"The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart."
Proverbs 17:3

"I love you, God," we say all the time. And we do... I do! But we easily deceive ourselves unless that love for God is proved through a test. Love will say, "I'd do anything for you, God; follow you anywhere." Obedience will say, "... and let me prove it." Obedience is not so much for God's sake, but ours. God wants us to realize the depth of our love for Him.

And so He tests us. He is the one who brings us "into prisons" and "lays burdens on our backs." All the while He never "withholds His love from us." His love drives Him to test us in order to refine us like silver. When gold is put through a refining process, it involves heat, as in a furnace. But when silver is refined, it involves pressure, as when one crushes a metal in a crucible. When a test heats up, you want to escape; when a trial is pressuring, you want to collapse. If we hold on, remain faithful, and rigorously obey, our hearts become refined. Obedience melts away pride and prejudice. Obedience crushes into dust self-centeredness revealing a heart, pure and at peace.
_________________________________

Others will notice when you come forth shining after a crucible experience. They may applaud your perseverance. Even this can be a test: "The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man is tested by the praise he receives" (Proverbs 27:21). Your response? "Praise be to God... he has not withheld his love from me."

Refine my heart so that my love for You is real and genuine. I would rather have this trial than a dull, dry heart.

Blessings,

Monday, August 26th

Another beautiful morning :-) Even with the heat advisory in place...

Kaylee and I had a nice visit with grandmas in Faribault and Paul had a good time at the Greek Festival with Jason yesterday... :-)

I continue to have pain in my hip and buttocks...I also have a tough time walking... :-(

Last might we started watching the end of a movie when surfing with the remote during commercials.  The movie was called Soul Surfer. Brittany was amazing...she lost her arm while surfing to a shark...
The reporters asked her if she would change anything about that day...she told the reporter she wouldn't...she wouldn't be standing here today talking to the reporters and meeting new and amazing people.
When you get in the impact zone you just get back up...

We all have difficulties in our lives to overcome...
So what's the point of it all?  Why does God allow us to suffer pain, illness, loss?  The answers to these questions will probably never be revealed to us in this life. But when we take stock of our experiences, the good and the bad, we find that the dark times have left us with more than just unpleasant memories. Perhaps we have gained new insights into our own personalities, found strength and depth we never knew we had.

And what do we do with these emotional gains?  We may go on to lead richer, more enlightened lives.  We may also seek to comfort those who hurt as we have hurt, this heeding God's call to look after our fellow humans.  Is this perhaps why God has permitted suffering in our lives?  We really can't answer that question.  But our lack of sure knowledge should not stop us from trying to act as God's tools for good here on earth. :- )

When we know ourselves then we know we can have that oneness with God just as Jesus has... :-)

Confronting Closed Doors

Read | Acts 16:6-10

God has the power to open any closed door. And yet He may decide to let things that seem important to us remain blocked. Why does the Lord allow doors to stay shut?

• Protection. He might be trying to keep us from making a mistake. On our own, we may not have adequate knowledge to make right choices.

• Redirection. God could be sending us on a new path. His plan might include bigger opportunities, deeper satisfaction, more productivity, a season of suffering, or an opportunity to glorify His name. The Lord closed doors in Asia so that the apostle Paul would minister on the continent of Europe. His obedience led to increased fruitfulness—the churches at Philippi, Thessalonica, and Corinth—and to more knowledge for us through his letters to them. Though Paul experienced much suffering, he also knew the joy of participating in God’s work.

• Testing. When God says “No,” our faith is tested, and we discover what we really believe about Him and His plans.

• Perseverance. When our path is blocked, we have opportunity to develop steadfastness. Romans 5:3-5 tells us that we should actually “exult in our tribulations,” because of the positive results the Lord will cause through them.

• Timing. Sometimes our Father places stop signs in our way to work out the right timing for His will.

• Disobedience. Past waywardness can affect future experiences and blessings.

When your way is stopped, look to God and seek His purpose for the interruption. How do you respond to “no”?

Today's Bible Study

By Dr. Charles Stanley

Joshua 21:45

God always keeps His promises. This is one thing you can be sure of and the principle bulwark of your faith: If the Lord says He is going to do something, then you can stake your life on the fact that He will do it. It is crucial for you to understand this if you want to grow in an intimate relationship with God and walk in the center of His will.

Think about it: in Matthew 16, when Jesus asked the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter responded, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (vv. 15–16). To this, Jesus declared, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that … upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it” (vv. 17–18).

Jesus did not mean that the church would be based on Peter; rather, it is founded on the truth that Jesus Christ is God’s Son and the Messiah. Jesus did, however, intend to use Peter and the others to spread the gospel.

Again, relationship was poured into the foundation of God’s work on earth—and it always will be. The Father kept His Word by sending us the Savior who would redeem us, and all the powers of hell could not prevent Him from fulfilling this all-important promise to us. Likewise, nothing can stop Him from keeping every pledge He has made to you.

Joshua 21:45 tells us, “Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.” This is the basis of your confidence that He will keep His promises for the future—that He will make a home for you in heaven (John 14:2–3), that you will see your believing loved ones there (1 Thess. 4:15–17), and that you will dwell in His presence forever (Rev. 22:3–5). All history testifies to the fact that God always keeps His Word. That’s why you are wise to trust Him.

Prudence - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

Prudence

"I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion."
Proverbs 8:12

People and labels. They really don't go together. It's much nicer to just push aside the politically correct protocol, snip off the label, and look at each other as ¼ people.

I tried this during a luncheon meeting with a group of Chicago inner-city pastors. My goal was to find out about the unique needs of disabled people living in an urban environment. The pastors were eager to discuss with me how they could minister to families that included a disabled child.

As we talked, I couldn't help but wonder, Now, am I supposed to refer to these men as "African American"? Or would they prefer the word "black"? I know "colored" is out-of-date. Hmm, although it's okay to say "people of color."

I shrugged my shoulders, smiled, and continued to talk with the pastors. The subject of color didn't come up. Later on, when we discussed Hispanic churches, I became tongue-tied between "Hispanic" and "Latino." I decided then to ask the pastors what word I should use.

To my surprise, they slapped the table and laughed. Little did I realize, but the pastors had been wrestling with questions of their own. They had been wondering, Now, are we supposed to call Joni "handicapped"? Or "physically challenged"? We know we're not supposed to refer to people like her as "cripples" or "invalids." Which is it?

We agreed labels didn't matter so long as you remember the person's name. I'm glad Jesus never spoke to one He loved as a prostitute; He just called her Mary Magdalene. He never made mention of someone being a coward; only that certain someone's name being Peter. To a workaholic he said, "Martha, Martha..." Jesus loved people. I'm sure that's why He often used their names when talking to them.
______________________________

That's good advice for you, too. Red or yellow, black or white, standing, sitting, blind or with sight, it's the name, not the label, that means the most to the person.

Father, help me to focus on individuals, just as You do with Your children. Amen

A Lesson from Christopher Reeve - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

 A Lesson from Christopher Reeve
"Man's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed."     Job 14:5

A few years back when I watched Christopher Reeve on television (the actor who was severely paralyzed in a riding accident), I was deeply moved. Although he sat stiff and rigid in his wheelchair, he smiled courageously as he puffed-and-sipped his mouth controls to steer his chair. The day after the program aired, I kept running into people who said, "Did you see Christopher on TV last night? Isn't he an inspiration?"

I smiled and nodded "yes," but thought, Just last week everyone was talking about assisted suicide for people like him. It is schizophrenic. One day letters to the editor applaud the courage of the severely disabled; the next, the editorial column can be filled with letters cheering on the new legislation legalizing assisted suicide. One day Christopher Reeve was positioned as "a helpless victim." The next, a picture of courage.

It tells me that society keeps a double standard. Society thinks it is appropriate to prevent able-bodied people from committing suicide, but considers it rational for a terminally ill or severely incapacitated person to end his life. More importantly, it shows that we lack confidence in God's ability to sustain those who suffer.
__________________________________

God gives common grace to non-believers who suffer and God gives special grace to believers who suffer. Is someone close to you terminally ill or severely incapacitated? Pray that God will give them grace today. Show a skeptical society the truth of 1 Corinthians 16:19-20, "You are not your own... Therefore honor God with your body." At all times, no matter how physically or mentally limited we are, it is the Lord of life who gives breath. Be the Lord's hands to help a suffering friend today. Through prayer and encouragement, help this hurting friend understand that life is worth living.

Help me to shatter the schizophrenia as I share with others that You are the Lord of life. Help me to support the hurting and encourage the dying. We Praise You for helping people like Christopher Reeve... using people like me. Amen

Saturday, August 24th

Another beautiful morning!

I started my new medication on Thursday, Cymbalta.  The pharmacist said it may take time before I feel any relief. :-)  Cymbalta was one of the medication we would see advertised on tv...Paul and I would comment on the number of side effects that this medication has...we would wonder if it would be worth it. ???? This medication costs me around $218.00 a month so hopefully it's worth it :-)

I am so thankful that my needs have always been met.  I am thankful for my family and friends, who fill my life with laughter, inspiration and companionship.

My life is filled with promise, peace, and love. . I am so very BLESSED :-)

Miraculous Forgiveness Meditation

Today our meditation and discussion focus on the gifts of forgiveness. If we want to experience loving, life-long relationships, we need to be able to let go of grievances, hostility, and anger. These feelings keep us mired in the past and weighed down with emotional pain. Ultimately, forgiveness is a gift we give to ourselves. It is an act of grace that restores the memory of wholeness.

It’s important to remember that forgiving is different from condoning an action that created pain for us or for others. Healthy relationships require healthy boundaries and are an important part of loving and honoring ourselves and each other. We can practice forgiveness even when we have chosen to discontinue a relationship due to unacceptable behavior. Sometimes we have to forgive someone many times before we finally let go of all the emotional residue of the past. Once we take steps to restore peace in our heart, we will feel a shift. We will feel lighter as we expand our capacity for love, compassion, and healing.

Our centering thought for today is:

Forgiveness is for me. Forgiveness sets me free.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Is there someone in your life you that you have not forgiven? In many cases, the person we most need to forgive is ourselves. Today have the intention to practice forgiveness. Encourage even the slightest hints of forgiveness, release, and compassion. If feelings of hurt and anger arise, tell yourself, I am willing to see this situation with love. I am willing to let go. Be gentle and patient with yourself as you hold the intention to heal and forgive.

An Example of Service

Read | Philippians 2:1-7

Jesus defied the world’s expectations regarding a divine being. Many Jewish people of that day were looking for a powerful king to liberate them from the Romans—they were prepared to serve and worship that kind of messiah. Instead, the Savior was a humble man who didn’t think twice about washing dirty feet. While Jesus Christ could have banished the Roman presence from the region and then been glorified as an earthly ruler, He was very clear about His reason for being here: He came to serve, not to be served (Matt. 20:28).

In fact, Paul refers to Jesus as the lowest form of worker—a bondservant. This type of laborer was responsible for the menial household tasks, including foot washings. Christ came into the world prepared to do whatever work was necessary to move men toward a saving knowledge of Himself. He values every soul. Zacchaeus, a despised tax collector, received His attention and love just as the Pharisee Nicodemus and the rich young ruler did (Luke 19:1-10; 18:18-25; John 3:1-8). Jesus also spent time with people on the lowest rung of the social ladder, healing the sick and afflicted, and speaking with children.

A servant’s life is not self-centered but rather is focused on God and His work. The Bible calls us to serve the Father by following in the Son’s footsteps. Believers would never refer to Jesus as weak, but those who chase after the world’s version of success probably would. Are you prepared to challenge our culture’s idea of power by accepting the humble position of servant?

Friday, August 23rd

Another beautiful day! :-) Sun is shining and temps ate in the 80's

I had my appointment yesterday with Dr Danning.  She made some changes to my medication...added Cymbalta for pain.  I go back to see her in December.  If we can get a handle on my swelling and pain then we may set up the surgery to fix my hernia. :-)

I've been reading other blogs and posts and found this...
Auto immune/immune deficiency conditions like to travel in packs. I have a few, but my underlying condition is actually an immune deficiency,

All auto immune conditions share:

Profound fatigue

Pain (joint/muscle)

Depression

and then whatever individual joys there are:

Temperature Dysregulation

Brain fog

Shortness of breath

Tingling and numbness

Rashes/burning skin/itching

Acceptance makes it easier, learning coping skills, as well, but nothing makes it OK.
We just live one day at a time...

Miraculous Union Meditation

Today our meditation is dedicated to sacred love and the experience of union in our relationships. As we have explored, love and spirit are the same force. At the core of every being there is only love, because the core of every being is only spirit. The two are the same—an abstract, unifying force that is all pervasive.

When we awaken to our essential loving, spiritual nature, we let go of old fears and defenses and connect with others in love. As we recognize the spirit in everyone we meet, we feel a deeper sense of peace, acceptance, and compassion. Our perspective shifts from “I” to “we,” and in this space of expanded awareness, miracles unfold.

Our centering thought for today is:

I radiate love.

MINDFUL MOMENT

You are more powerful and influential than you think! Today use this influence to change the world. Take a few moments to visualize an energy pulse that is filled with love and peace for all. One way to cultivate energy is to clap your hands once and when they touch with impact begin to rub them together, back and forth. Feel and visualize the heat growing and expanding between your hands. Hold this energy ball as if it is the most precious gift you have to offer to the world in this moment. Allow your hands to separate and feel the energy grow within the space between your hands. Open your hands, sending this tangible loving intention to someone you know or to everyone in the world. Once you have offered your gift, let go, knowing that your love has already been received.

Turning the Other Cheek

Read | Luke 6:29-31

Immediately following His arrest, Jesus was interrogated by the high priest. When He provided an “unsatisfactory” answer, one of the officials struck Him in the face. Instead of literally offering His other cheek to be slapped, the Savior calmly challenged the man’s unjust action. The Lord did not defend Himself or retaliate, but He also refused to accept the abuse unquestioningly, despite the fact that He knew He would receive more (John 18:21-23).

The Bible passage telling us to turn the other cheek confuses many Christians. Are we to stand still while someone beats us up physically or emotionally? No. But we are not to retaliate in kind. Pride will certainly trigger a desire to take revenge on the coworker who stole credit for our work or the family member who repeatedly says unkind words. Yet we are not to “repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing” (1 Peter 3:9).

In daily practice, the situation will determine what form a godly response will take. We may need to ignore the other person’s actions, walk away from abuse, or confront our enemy—confrontation designed to gain understanding and reconciliation is not inappropriate. In fact, Jesus instructs us to transform rivals into friends by means of respectful discourse (Matt. 18:15). Asking “Why do you feel about me as you do?” can reveal the strength of agape—unconditional love—to minister to a hurting soul despite the potential for injury.

Might God be calling you to show agape? Pray for the desire and power to “turn the other cheek” as Christ did.

Thursday, August 22nd

Another beautiful morning!  I hear rumbling going on in the distance...sounds like we may get some rain after all.  :-)

Yesterday, I met my sister over in Rochester for a manicure and pedicure.   After our nails we went out to eat at Applebees.  Had a good time... :-)

I woke up real early this morning with my right ankle and hip throbbing.  It feels like my ankle is getting weaker.  My Dr appointment is this afternoon.  :-) So glad :-) I've been hurting alot more lately...Why????
Is it because of the changing weather...the barometric pressure???? Medication isn't working????

I attempted to get up and fell back into bed.  I was able to stand and walk slowly out of the room hanging onto things as I went.  :-(
While I'm sitting here my right leg is tingling.

So thankful for what I can do. :-)

Miraculous Independence Meditation

In today’s meditation we will reflect on the beautiful truth that we are already whole. We were created by universal intelligence as a complete expression of love, wisdom, and happiness. If we feel like something is missing, it is because we are seeing through the eyes of our ego-mind, which has a limited perspective of our infinite, divine nature.

With the realization that we already have everything we need and desire, we give up the exhausting search to find that person or situation or achievement to make us feel whole. We stop waiting for someone to complete us and open to the love that is right here, right now, in our own heart. And from that boundless well of spirit, we are free to share the deepest experience of love with the people in our lives.

Our centering thought for today is:

All I seek is within.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Begin to write your own love story today by treating yourself as the most precious being in the universe. Throughout the day, ask yourself, What is the most loving thing I could do for myself right now? What is the most loving way I could treat myself? Listen to the response of your heart and follow its guidance.

Blessing Our Enemies

Read | Luke 6:27-28

As stories make their way to us from the persecuted church, we hear about Christians who, though beaten, harassed, and jailed, respond with unimaginable grace and dignity. These saints have learned to apply Christ’s command to “love your enemies,” even in the harshest of circumstances.

We may never face a beating for our faith, but we will run across people who hate and mistreat us. The easy and natural response is to dislike them in return, but harboring ill will chokes our witness with resentment. Instead, Jesus instructs us to love our adversaries and to treat them well. The Greek word is agape—it means “unconditional love,” which is not a soft feeling based on the attractive nature or appearance of the other person. Agape forms through an act of our will. When we choose to love, our emotions follow the decision of our mind.

A right response to an enemy will prove beneficial to him. God has a redemptive plan in mind for his life, and we have an opportunity to help show him the way to the Lord. A bitter or angry response on our part will serve only to feed our adversary’s desire to cause harm.

The natural urge to return one wrong for another can be subdued only through prayer, the most powerful weapon in our arsenal. Instead of begging the Father to defeat our enemy, we can ask Him for the opportunity to express genuine Christlike love in the face of opposition. That’s the kind of prayer He delights to answer. And when we are privileged to meet the need of someone who despises us, we might just see an amazing change in his life.

Another great day!

Use It! - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

August 20, 2013

Use It!

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."      Galatians 6:10

Tyler Law, age 9, strode in front of the gurney that was to take him to surgery for his cancerous arm. "Can I walk?" he had asked the orderly who came to get him. "Sure, kid," the orderly had said, as he fell in line behind the brave patient and joined the parents. The three of them watched as Tyler marched ten paces in front of them. He was raising his bad arm in the air and pumping his biceps in and out.

When they arrived at the prep room his dad asked, "So what was that arm pumping thing about?" "Oh," Tyler answered. "I just wanted to get as much use out of it as I could in case they have to cut it off."

Tyler lived on the brink of losing his arm and took every opportunity to use it for that which it was intended - movement. Muscles tightening, tendons flexing, joints moving, neurons firing. Not a second of enjoying that arm was going to be lost while Tyler still had the chance.

Tyler's words also reveal more than his bravery. They strike a chord of truth about our lives: Use it. Now. I fear that, in our modern Christian world where we are quick to "avoid burnout," we have not used our lives as they were intended. Paul admonishes us to take advantage of the opportunities afforded us to do good. Our lives have so much potential for doing good. We take for granted our time, our talents, our energy, and assume that it must be saved for some great purpose later on. God's purpose for us is not later, it is now.
__________________________

The opportunities to use our lives for that which they are intended - loving God - are now. Find those opportunities today. Pursue them to the end, bravely, knowing that it might be the last day afforded for such work.

Lord, I'm taking inventory of my life. What do I have that I'm not using? Where can it be applied, today?

Making Music - Joni and Friends

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional

Making Music in One Accord

"May the Lord who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves, as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."      Romans 15:5-6

Christopher Parkening plays the guitar like few people in this world are able. Whether on stage with the New York Philharmonic or in front of an audience of three, he can bring out the power and mystery behind those six strings. Not one note is out of place, out of sync. Whether strummed together or plucked separately, the strings all work together to create the desired melody or harmony.

Musical accord on the guitar doesn't happen by chance. Only certain strings pressed down in particular combinations will produce the desired sound. Whether it plays Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire or a Spanish dance, the guitar's beauty is heard when the strings are in proper relation to one another.

This is what it means to be "in one accord."

I wonder if Paul had beautiful music in mind when he prayed that the Romans would have a spirit of unity and with one mouth would glorify God.   Did he picture the church in Rome as if in a concert on stage before the world?   Did he hear in his mind the impact of that church on history? We know now that the music of the Roman church did catch on and changed the world. The Christians endured years of suffering until the fourth century when the Empire at last acknowledged the harmony of the Gospel. It abandoned its cultic practices. It paved the way for missionaries instead of persecuting them. And the world has not been the same since then.
___________________________

You and I have the responsibility to use our gifts and live in accordance with God's will. And the promise of God is that living together in such a way will make for beautiful music and lasting impact.

Tune my heart today, Lord, to Your will. Then play my life in accordance with others who love You and desire to sing Your praises.  Amen

Today's Meditation

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." —Mother Teresa

Miraculous Communication Meditation

In the yogic tradition, our ability to communicate with clarity and compassion is governed by an energy center or chakra located in the area of our throat. When the energy in our throat chakra is flowing freely, we’re able to express our truth without worrying about being judged or misunderstood. We’re also able to listen with our heart, truly hearing the messages other people are sending us. When the energy of our throat chakra is congested, however, we may feel anxious about how other people will react to our views and we are likely to censor ourselves. We may also find it difficult to listen with an open heart and an open mind.

Today in our meditation together we will focus our attention on expanding the flow of energy in our throat chakra, holding the intention to communicate with clarity, compassion, and honesty.

Our centering thought for today is:

I fearlessly speak my truth with love.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Today we invite you to try a conscious communication practice rooted in the Buddhist tradition. Before you speak, ask yourself these four questions: Is what I’m about to say kind? It is true? Is it necessary? Does it improve upon the silence? If you can answer yes to all four questions, then your words will resonate with authenticity and love. Consider posting these four questions somewhere you will see them each day, maybe adding them to the wallpaper on your phone. Each carefully delivered communication will provide you with abundant blessings.

Hindrances to Success

Read | Galatians 6:9-10

No matter how carefully we plan our time, we will now and then run into obstacles. They might be interruptions, miscommunications, cancellations, or delays. We have no control over many of these types of situations, but we are able to change certain kinds of hindrances.

We can, for example, adjust misplaced priorities. Consider how often we allow others to dictate how we spend our time. Instead of maintaining a God-centered schedule, we may be responding to the demands of other people, permitting them to decide our activities without regard for what God has in mind for us.

Circumstances can also determine our schedule, if we permit. But we cannot succeed in life if we let ourselves be drawn away from what God wants. Investing time in the Word and learning God’s ways must be an integral part of our schedule.

Another hindrance to reaching our goal is procrastination. We all experience this on occasion, but for some of us, putting things off has become a habit. When that’s the case, we no doubt have many good intentions but lack follow-through. Success will evade us as long as we dally.

A third hindrance that we can work to overcome is lack of concentration. To be successful, we must focus our minds on a particular task and stay with it until it is finished. Having a strong motivation to achieve the Lord’s plan is helpful, as we work at completing what we value and desire. How important to you is achieving the Lord’s plan? Align your thinking and your time with His ways, and success—in God’s eyes—will follow

Another great day!

Tuesday, August 20th

Another beautiful morning.  We really need some rain...

I had a better day yesterday so I didn't call my Dr...I'll hang in there until my appointment on Thursday unless something else pops up :-)

I picked up Kaylee at 11:30am from daycare and I decided to go visit Grandmas in Faribault.  It's been almost two weeks already. Both enjoyed seeing her. She continues to grow so fast :-). We didn't make it back home until around 5:00pm...was a long day.    :-) Swollen and sore but it wasn't as bad as it has been...I could walk.  :-) When we got back I put my feet up.

Funny how one day is so different from the next.  I'm not doing anything any different...I don't think????
Was it something I ate????  That was probably the only thing that was different...
Paul picked up some cheese from a cheese market, so we've been eating cheese and crackers for a before bed snack...
Sunday night we had vanilla yogurt instead and I had a better day yesterday...
Last night we had cheese and crackers again...this morning I'm already swollen and in extreme pain...will see if taking the medicine helps... :-)

Today's Meditation

"The world changes when we change. The world softens when we soften. The world loves us when we choose to love the world."
—Marianne Williamson

When we meditate on a regular basis, we develop what is known as “witnessing awareness”—the ability to calmly and objectively observe a situation, acknowledge when we are being triggered, and consciously choose how we want to respond. Instead of feeling stuck in knee-jerk reactions and conditioned patterns of behavior, we free ourselves to make choices that will help us fulfill our deepest desires for love, fulfillment, and happiness.

In today’s meditation we will deepen our experience of witnessing awareness as we practice staying present with our emotions. So often there is a tendency to judge certain feelings as “negative” or “wrong.” We may resist feeling these emotions but this only increases our pain. Every emotion has a valuable message for us, and as we allow ourselves to feel and hold each emotion in loving awareness, our relationship with our self and with everyone in our lives will become more authentic and whole.

Our centering thought for today is:

I release and my heart is at peace.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Today set the intention to consult your heart before you act on any emotion. Your heart is a reliable guide that helps you experience empathy, compassion, and love. The heart is the seat of emotional intelligence, and it allows you to get in touch with your true self. It nurtures all of your relationships by reminding you to see yourself in the other. See through the eye of your heart and you open the doorway to manifesting the life and relationships you most desire.

Time for Success

Read | Ephesians 5:15-17

For Christ-followers, succeeding in God’s eyes is the only kind of achievement that matters. Sometimes, however, success seems to elude us. When it does, examining what we are thinking and how we’re spending our time can help us move forward. There’s a relationship between spiritual success and the way we use our time. To become the person God wants each of us to be and to achieve the tasks He’s given us to do, we must manage our time carefully.

Time is a gift God has given us, and we’re accountable to Him for the way we spend it. We need to recognize that time is not ours to fill as we choose, but rather, it’s a trust from the Lord to be utilized in ways that fulfill His plan. Reviewing our schedule regularly will help ensure that we invest this precious resource His way.

Take a moment right now to review your calendar for the rest of this week, and ask yourself the following questions:

1. Does this schedule reveal a wise use of my time, according to God’s principles?

2. Where will I end up if I continue to invest my time in the same activities I’m currently involved in? Will it be where God wants me to be?

3. What will I be accomplishing for the kingdom of God if I continue to use my time in this way?

4. Does the way I spend my time help me move closer to achieving the Lord’s goal for me—namely, ongoing personal transformation into Christlikeness?

Respond to what the Holy Spirit reveals about your schedule, so that you may make wise use of your days. Remember that God wants you to succeed.

Another great day!

Life Ain't Easy

"We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God."
Acts 14:22

Everyone who takes the Bible seriously, and many who don't, agree that God hates suffering. Jesus spent much of His short life relieving it. Scores of passages tell us to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, visit inmates, and speak up for the helpless. When we feel compassion for people in distress, we know that God felt it first. He shows this by raising sick people from their beds -- sometimes to the wonder of doctors, in answer to prayer. Every day He grants childless women babies, pulls small-business owners out of financial pits, protects Alzheimer's patients crossing the street, and writes happy endings to sad situations. Even when He has to punish sin, He says it gives Him no pleasure (Ezekiel 18:32). In heaven, Eden's curse will be canceled. Sighs and longings will be historical curiosities. Tears will evaporate. Tissue companies will go broke.

But it simply doesn't follow that God's only relationship to suffering is to relieve it. He specifically says that all who follow Him can expect hardship. But didn't Jesus hang on a cross so we wouldn't have to suffer hell? Yes, but not so we wouldn't have to suffer here -- on earth. Listen to the Bible on this:

"I will show [Paul] how much he must suffer for my name" (Acts 9:16).

"For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ... to suffer for him... " (Philippians 1:29).
____________________________

The Bible goes even further. After calling Christians "heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ" it adds -- "if indeed we share in his sufferings." In other words, no one goes to Christ's heaven who doesn't first share Christ's sufferings. Do you think you should be exempt from suffering? Listen to this final word from Hebrews 5:8, "Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered..." This week, purpose in your heart to be no greater than your Master. If He suffered, you can expect it too.

May I learn obedience through the hard thing I'm going through right now, God.  Amen

Blessings,

Another beautiful morning!

I continue to have the swelling which then increases my pain...I've been wondering if I should call my Dr and see if she thinks I should come in earlier.  My appointment, otherwise, is on Thursday at 3:30.  I've had a tough time walking for a few days now and I don't want to cause any additional problems.
I do wish I had a way to switch on and off parts of my struggles.  I  could use a break. :-)

I didn't make it to church yesterday because of the pain and difficulty walking.  Instead I turned on the TV and watched a show called Super Soul Sunday on the Oprah network.  I thought this show was eye opening.

On Super Soul Sunday they were talking about...

* We all have struggles and different was of coping with those struggles or problems...we are all the same...Some people use alcohol, drugs, overeat, undereat, shop, work and on and on...we all have our own addictions to help us through our problems. :-)

* There is an order in all that happens in our lives and things happen for a reason.  Accept and trust there is a meaning behind all that happens. :-)

* You are valuable in who you are, just the way you are...use your knowledge to teach others.  :-)

"We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are."
—The Talmud

Miraculous Reflection Meditation

Today in our meditation we will explore the mirror of relationship. This is the idea that all of our relationships are a reflection of ourselves. The people we are attracted to are those who have traits that we have, only more so. We enjoy their company because we subconsciously feel that being with them will help us to cultivate and manifest those traits even more in our own lives. In the same way, we are repelled by people who reflect back to us traits that that are difficult to face in our own selves.

The mirror of relationship is a valuable tool that we can use to see ourselves more clearly and to expand our awareness. As we become willing to embrace the light and shadow that we all possess, we bring love and healing to ourselves and our relationships.

Our centering thought for today is:

The world is my mirror.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Pay attention to the lessons that you can learn from others today. Observe your reactions to the many people who cross your path. When you can see that everyone in the world is simply sharing your own consciousness, you will lose the need to judge others and open to greater understanding and love. With each encounter you have, observe carefully and repeat these words silently to yourself, “In you I see me, in me I see you.” Feel the compassion in your heart open and witness how the way you see the world begins to change.

God’s Condition for Blessing

Read | Romans 12:1-2

If people were really honest, many would say their Christianity barely resembles the faith experience God has promised. They struggle repeatedly with the same sins, complain that God rarely answers prayers, and wonder why He hasn’t given them the desires of their heart. However, most believers never stop to ask, Why doesn’t God favor me?

The answer to that question can revolutionize our life if we are willing to meet God’s one condition for full blessing. We are designed with a capacity to experience the Lord’s best in every area of life, but for that to happen, we must offer ourselves as living sacrifices. In other words, we are to be separated from the world and given to God for His purposes.

Don’t be fooled by cultural views on servants. God doesn’t call the weak into bondage to the strong. In fact, believers are the freest people in the world because we can trust our Father to give us the very best in return for our commitment. His best may not always look appealing from the outset, but experience teaches us that He orchestrates all circumstances to our benefit (Rom. 8:28).

We can never be satisfied with less than the Lord’s best. Avoiding submission will result in wasted years of chasing after His blessing through our own cunning. On the other hand, our hearts are saturated with joy and peace when we draw close to Him. The best way to connect with God is to willingly put ourselves in His hand. Allow Him to reveal what great blessings He can send via your surrendered will.

Another great day!

Highs -n- Lows Living with the Disease

Sunday, August 18th

Another beautiful Sunday morning! We are looking at highs in the 80's today.

I'm waiting for my medication to kick in to see if it helps with my pain...I'm having the shooting nerve pain this morning. :-(

I was listening to a program on the christian radio station. They were talking about healing.  They mentioned that if everyone was healed it would be the norm but a healing happens on occasion and this makes it a miracle.
They mentioned  that Joni Eareckson Tada prayed for healing but was not physically healed.  She realizes that she has done more for God from her wheelchair than she would have been able to do if she was healed.  God knows what's best for each of us.  We may want something different but we must wait on the Lord.

I continue to pray for healing.  I would love to go back to what I was able to do before but I know God may have another plan for me.  Maybe I can do more for Him in my current condition or situation than if I was healed.  :-)

I have many changes taking place...I don't have the strength in my legs like I used too. The right one is the worse. Some days I have a difficult time walking without holding on to something.   Due to my physical changes I have changed some of the ways I care for myself...I don't take a shower as often...I take a bath in the walk in tub instead, it is much easier for me.  Who would have thought that when I got the walk in tub for Grandma Gloria that one day I would need it for myself :-(

"But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
 Isaiah 40:31

Father God, teach me to come to You for strength when I feel as though I have none.  Help me to turn my thoughts away from what was and turn them to what can be in You. Amen!

I am so thankful for each day... :-)

Today's Meditation

"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive." —Dalai Lama

Miraculous Divinity Meditation

Today we focus on seeing with eyes of love. While each of us appears to be a separate individual, we are all inextricably connected at the soul level. We are all expressions of the infinite field of pure potentiality, also known as spirit, God.  When we relate to each other from the level of ego or personality, it is easy to get caught up in the struggle for control and approval and the need to be right. But when we relate to each other from the soul level, we experience the expansion of love, joy, compassion, and harmony.

Our centering thought for today is:

I see through the eyes of my soul.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Today send everyone you encounter a silent blessing. You may want to silently repeat the greeting of namasté: the spirit in me honors the spirit in you. Consider dedicating today to living the true spirit of namasté—giving yourself permission to internally bow to each and every person that crosses your path as you witness, honor and acknowledge the divine spirit that they are.

By Charles F. Stanley

We become steadfast Christians, able to endure and overcome, through the power of Jesus Christ. Job stress has become such a universal problem that many medical professionals now classify it as an occupationally related disease, precipitating numerous other serious problems such as ulcers, depression, and even suicide.

Causes of Stress

In our complex environment, however, pressure on the job is just one of many causes of high tension and anxiety. Family trouble, financial difficulty, and other factors induce a great deal of turmoil. In fact, there is even a detailed list that assigns points to the various sources of stress.
For example, the most stressful of events is the death of a spouse, divorce, marital separation, a jail term, death of another family member, and illness or injury. Still, the strains of work account for many of the stress-producing agents, including dismissal, retirement, business readjustment, change to a different kind of work, change in work responsibilities, trouble with supervision, and change in work hours or conditions.

Common Reactions to Stress

There are several common reactions to stress. Many try to flee the problem—changing jobs, bosses, or environment—in the hopes that the irritation will go away. Some internalize their duress, seeking to suppress it. However, it usually spills over into some other area, most often into the family life. Still others crumble emotionally, giving way to despair and depression.

The Christian's Responses to Stress

The believer's response to such adversity is critical if he is to emerge successfully. The Word of God reveals several fundamental principles that can bring us through tough times and even positively benefit our spiritual and emotional well-being in the process.

First, we should look at our situation as with a telescope, not under a microscope. All too often, we magnify our troubles beyond their significance and in so doing increase their pressure. Instead, remember that God is the author and finisher of our faith, knowing the end from the beginning and providing all of our necessities for the present. Concentrate on today's problems, not tomorrow's, and thank God for His daily grace to sustain you.

Second, rely on God's strength, not yours. Satan deceives us into thinking we can handle our strains in our own cleverness and abilities—until we are almost at the breaking point. The key is to lean on His indwelling might at the initial stage of the problem. God's strength comes as He stabilizes our emotions with His peace, infuses our hearts with His joy, and provides us with His all-sufficient wisdom to deal with any hardship in life. "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might" (Ephesians 6:10). "He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength" (Isaiah 40.29).

Third, thank God that He is at work producing some positive results from your stressful circumstances. Trials always turn us toward the Lord, seeking and trusting Him with new fervor. Trials also are working in us to create sturdier Christian character and the ability to persevere under the load. "And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope" (Romans 5:3, 4). As we turn to the sufficiency of Christ and trust in His power and wisdom, we gain new spiritual maturity and hardiness of spirit.

How God Uses Our Stressful Times

God is never out to break us or shatter us. He knows our frame and will not overload us in times of stress. Rather, He seeks to use our stressful times as cleverly disguised opportunities for us to gain His perspective, lean on His strength, and develop steadfastness with which we can run life's course.

God may not change the circumstance that is pressing so grievously on you. He may not remove that person who vexes you so greatly. He may not heal that affliction that daily grates away at your body and soul. But He will dramatically alter your own emotions and responses as you turn to Him instead of running or exploding.

Over time, you truly will find His strength, wisdom, and presence sufficient for the fray. Your stress will become a catalyst for spiritual stability instead of an agent of destruction and despair. The pressure will reinforce your faith, not weaken it. We became steadfast Christians, able to endure and overcome through the power of Jesus Christ.

"Cast your burden on the LORD, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved" (Psalm 55:22).

Another great day!

Saturday, August 17th

Another beautiful morning! :-)

Yesterday was a little better...I had the soreness in my right hip and buttocks again but not as bad as it was on Thursday.  I could walk on it without assistance.
It felt like my leg slipped out of joint temporarily...it has done it once before.  It's still swelling all over.   :-(

Paul, Christine, Kaylee and I went to a few garage sales and found a lot of things for the grandkids.  Couldn't believe the number of sales...not sure I could make it to all of them...so many. :-)

We met Kris, Jason and Asa for lunch in Rochester and then headed back home.

So lucky to have such a wonderful family...

"The quieter you become, the more you can hear." —Ram Dass

Miraculous Awareness Meditation

Today, as we continue on the journey toward creating miraculous relationships, we explore one of the richest gifts we have to offer others: our undivided attention. In the enlightening stillness of meditation, we will focus on the many gifts available through listening with our ears, heart, and soul.

Consider for a moment the last time you truly felt heard. What a gift it is when another person is truly present, hearing our words as well as receiving all the unspoken messages we send through our energy, body, and nonverbal communication. Listening is a form of mindful attention that brings us fully into the present moment, where miracles can unfold in our relationships and in every area of our lives.

Our centering thought for today is:

I am present.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Set the intention to have at least one conversation today in which you truly listen with your heart and soul. Give yourself permission to pause your busy inner dialogue. Listen to the words being spoken and make the choice to listen beyond the words to receive the full spirit and potential of the message. With fresh and attentive eyes and ears, witness the miracle of the person before you, seeing them through the eyes of your heart. With this practice you invite true connection, infinite possibility, and abundant love into your life and relationships.

The Pain of Bitterness

Read | 1 Samuel 13:5-14

Bitterness is never a proper response for a child of God. It poisons the mind, emotions, and spirit. When did this resentful attitude take root in Saul? Let’s look at two events in his life for clues.

Saul couldn’t go to battle until Samuel arrived to offer the burnt sacrifice as God had commanded. Before the prophet arrived, though, Saul’s men became scared of the enemy and started to leave, so the king took action and made the sacred offering himself. He may have thought, This has to be done right away. Why shouldn’t I do it? He failed to see the necessity of obeying divine commands to the letter. God saw this as a serious act of rebellion, which brought judgment: Saul’s kingdom wouldn’t endure. God would one day appoint someone else to take over as ruler instead of Saul’s descendants. Imagine Saul’s reaction to hearing the kingdom would not belong to his family.

During the war against the Amalekites, King Saul once again failed to follow the Lord’s instructions fully. When Samuel confronted him about his misdeed, he lied and claimed that he had obeyed. Later, however, Saul attempted to justify his disobedience. His unrepentant heart grieved the Lord and resulted in further judgment: he, the king, was now rejected by God (1 Sam. 15:10-11, 26).

I believe Saul’s descent into bitterness began with the news that his disobedience would cost him the kingdom. Be sure to take your disappointments and anger immediately to the Lord. Pour them out before Him, and ask that He help you let them go. Your spiritual health depends on it.

Highs -n- Lows Living with the Disease

Friday, August 16th

Another beautiful morning with highs in the 70's again today :-)

Yesterday, I started out in the morning with just a pressure in my right hip and buttocks area or an uncomfortable feeling. As the day went on it got to the point I couldn't put my full weight down when I was walking. :-)  My hands continue to spasm or locking up.
I even took a nap yesterday afternoon...I don't do that very often.  I wasn't feeling very well.     :-)

I will see how today goes, :-) hopefully better than yesterday...
My right side is still alittle sensitive.

Christine, Kaylee, Paul and I are going to garage sales being held for the Corn on the Cob days celebration in Plainview.  After garage sales we are meeting, Kris Asa and Jason at HuHut in Rochester... :-) Should be a good day...

Here is the stance of the trusting heart: waiting quietly in the trust that God will act on your behalf. Declarating that God alone is your hope, your protection, your salvation. Today, leave whatever is troubling you at God's feet. Wait quietly for him to act. Your victory comes from God alone.

Today's Meditation

"Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another." —Albert Einstein

Miraculous Dynamism Meditation

Today in our meditation we will explore our essential energetic nature. At the deepest level, we are all powerful energetic beings. We inherently possess the ability to shift the world around us with our presence and how we project ourselves. When we walk into a room, our energetic state of being is communicated before we say a word. If we’re coming from love, everyone feels it. And if we’re feeling resentful, edgy, sad or preoccupied, everyone can feel that, too. Silently, our energy speaks and our thoughts, feelings and intentions ripple out into the world.

Our capacity to affect others with our energy is both a gift and a responsibility. Ultimately, we have the power to choose how we show up and interact in this world. When we choose to come from compassion, peace, and unity, we become a powerful force for good and open the door to deep and rich relationships.

Our centering thought for today is:

I use my energy to heal and transform.

MINDFUL MOMENT

Today, pay attention to your energetic state. Take time to focus your awareness on how your state of being may be affecting other people. If you notice that you’re feeling prickly, irritable, or otherwise out of sorts, take a few moments to breathe deeply into your heart, sending yourself love and self-compassion. Acknowledge your distress without judging it, and notice how your energy shifts. Each time you pause, assess, reframe, and choose love, you are truly leading your life toward your destiny. You are opening to your infinite potential.

The Danger of Bitterness

Read | 1 Samuel 18:1-30

King Saul had it all: God’s anointing on him as ruler; the prophet Samuel to guide him; the power and wealth of the kingdom of Israel; the applause of the people. Yet he died a bitter man. What steps led to his downfall?

• Anger. When Goliath was defeated, the crowds praised Saul as a killer of thousands but David as a slayer of tens of thousands. Instead of rejoicing that God had raised up someone to slay the giant, Saul grew angry with David for receiving more praise than he did.

• Wrong thinking. Saul’s flaring temper affected his mind, and he became suspicious of David’s motives. He started thinking that since the Lord was with David, the young man would want to take over the kingdom right away.

• Fear. Saul’s fear led to plotting against David and throwing spears at him.

• Rejection. The king sent David away from his presence.

• Dread. Saul’s fear grew stronger with David’s military success and the people’s growing love for the younger man.

• Deceitful action. Twice the king tried to manipulate David by offering one of his daughters in marriage. Both times he plotted to get David killed by the Philistines, and each attempt failed. Saul’s response was to become David’s enemy for the rest of his days. From then on, bitterness reigned.

Although the details of our lives differ from Saul’s, the steps to bitterness and ruin are the same. What unresolved anger do you allow to fester? Whom do you avoid because of ill will? Won’t you confess your sin, turn to God, and be set free?

Another great day!
